Why Stunt Driving Is Worse for G2 Drivers
Every Ontario driver faces serious consequences for stunt driving. But G2 drivers face an additional layer of penalties that makes the situation significantly more dangerous for your driving future.
Standard penalties everyone faces:
- 30-day roadside licence suspension (immediate, before any court date)
- 14-day vehicle impound at your expense
- Fines from $2,000 to $10,000 upon conviction
- Licence suspension of up to 2 years on a first offence
- 6 demerit points
- Up to 6 months in jail
Additional penalties for G2 drivers:
- A separate 30-day novice driver suspension under graduated licensing rules
- Potential licence cancellation—not just suspension, but cancellation
- If cancelled, you must restart the graduated licensing process from the G1 written test
- A lower demerit point threshold: G2 drivers face suspension at 9 points instead of 15
That last point deserves emphasis. A stunt driving conviction adds 6 demerit points. For a G2 driver, that’s two-thirds of the way to automatic suspension. One more minor ticket after that could trigger another suspension on top of everything else.
Licence Cancellation vs. Licence Suspension: What G2 Drivers Need to Understand
There’s a critical difference between suspension and cancellation, and most G2 drivers don’t realize it until it’s too late.
Suspension means your licence is temporarily taken away. When the suspension period ends, you get it back. You pick up where you left off in the graduated licensing system.
Cancellation means your G2 licence is erased. It no longer exists. To drive again, you must go back to the very beginning—pass the G1 written test, hold a G1 for 12 months (or 8 months with a driving course), pass the G2 road test, hold a G2 for another 12 months, and then pass the full G road test. That’s potentially 2 to 3 years before you’re back to where you were before the charge.
This is why fighting a stunt driving charge as a G2 driver isn’t optional. The consequences of doing nothing are far worse than for a fully licensed driver.
The Insurance Nightmare for G2 Drivers
Insurance is already expensive for G2 drivers. Young, novice drivers pay some of the highest premiums in Ontario. A stunt driving conviction makes it catastrophic.
The average Ontario driver pays approximately $1,800 per year for auto insurance. G2 drivers typically pay significantly more. After a stunt driving conviction, rates jump to $8,000–$15,000+ per year. That’s an increase of 300–500% or more.
Many standard insurers—Intact, Aviva, TD, and others—will refuse to cover you entirely. You’ll be forced into the high-risk market through Ontario’s Facility Association, which charges rates 2–3 times higher than even specialty high-risk companies. And this impact lasts 6 or more years.
For a G2 driver who might be 18 or 20 years old, that means paying extreme insurance rates through some of the most important years of your early career. The total excess insurance cost over 3 years alone ranges from $16,200 to $35,100+ above what you’d normally pay.
It was excellent service by Jonathan. He removed my stunt case and convert into normal speeding ticket and the main thing was i have G2 license and it was very hard to get rid of stunt case but thanks to Jonathan. Highly recommended for stunt case.
Kaumil Patel
Kaumil’s experience shows exactly what’s possible. Even with a G2 licence—which makes stunt driving cases harder—the charge was reduced to a simple speeding ticket. That’s the difference between insurance devastation and a manageable outcome.
How Stunt Driving Charges Get Withdrawn in Ontario
Charges don’t disappear on their own. They get withdrawn when a skilled legal representative exposes weaknesses in the Crown’s case. Here’s what we look for.
Speed measurement problems. The officer’s radar or laser equipment must be properly calibrated and operated according to exact procedures. Equipment malfunctions happen. Calibration records are sometimes incomplete or missing. One procedural error in how speed was measured can be enough to challenge the entire charge.
Procedural errors. Police must follow specific legal procedures during every traffic stop. They must inform you of your rights. They must properly document everything. Violations give us grounds to challenge the evidence or exclude it entirely.
Inconsistent statements. Officers write reports at the scene, then testify weeks or months later. Inconsistencies between the written report and testimony undermine credibility. Judges notice when stories change.
Questionable conclusions. The officer decided this was “stunt driving.” But the definition under the Highway Traffic Act is broad. Was the driving actually reckless? Was the speed measurement accurate? Could conditions have affected the reading? These questions create reasonable doubt.
The provincial data proves these challenges work. Out of 11,284 stunt driving charges, 4,422 were withdrawn before trial (39.2%) and another 1,029 were withdrawn at trial (9.1%). That’s 5,451 total withdrawals—nearly half of all charges.
Real Withdrawal Rates Across Ontario Courts
Where your case is heard matters enormously. Different courthouses have dramatically different withdrawal rates.
| Courthouse | Total Charges | Withdrawn Before Trial | Withdrawal Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waterloo | 656 | 573 | 87.3% |
| Barrie | 660 | 520 | 78.8% |
| Durham | 400 | 269 | 67.3% |
| Mississauga | 778 | 476 | 61.2% |
| Toronto | 718 | 373 | 51.9% |
| Brampton | 1,000 | 475 | 47.5% |
Even Brampton—with the lowest rate on this list—still sees nearly half of all stunt driving charges withdrawn. Waterloo courts withdraw at 87.3%. We know each court, each jurisdiction, and how to adjust strategy accordingly.
What Our Clients Say
Jon Cohen was my lawyer and quite frankly I couldn’t ask for a better outcome. As a first time client I was charged with stunt driving 107/60 and my case was completely dropped due to him.
Ali
My first time needing a lawyer for a stunt driving ticket, and hands down would use Jon’s expertise again if (hopefully not) needed!
J
I got summoned for Stunt Driving (91km in a 50km zone), plus failed to surrender drivers license & insurance document in August 2023. Jon and his team must have worked hard on my case, because my charges got dropped to just a speeding ticket. This was an excellent outcome and i was satisfied with the result! Thank you!

My husband was trying to get my medicine and help me as I was fresh out of the hospital and he was panicked and was speeding- 107km in a 40km area (he was not familiar with the area) and he was caught and charged with stunt driving and was facing loss of license, $10 000 fine, and even the possibility of jail time. He also had a history of speeding tickets. I did extensive research and made many calls to every lawyer I thought could help and Jonathan and his business partner Dan at Next Law had impeccable reviews, and took the time to speak with us and go through the entire process. They treated us like I imagine they would treat their own family and really went above and beyond. They have incredible working relationships with many prosecutors in Ontario and this is a HUGE advantage when they are discussing your case and coming to an agreement. Because of their relationship with the prosecutor they got his stunt driving charge dropped down to a simple speeding ticket!! We didn’t even believe this was possible and we were prepared for a much heavier penalty. My husband had learned his lesson and is overly cautious while driving. We can’t tell you how grateful we are to NextLaw for their time and effort and attention to every detail. I would highly recommend these amazing gents if you’re ever in need of a lawyer. They are top tier and we couldn’t have asked for more. Do yourself a favour and if you have a heavy fine, ticket, or charge don’t gamble with the outcome- these lawyers are amazing and will do everything in their power to get you the best possible result. Just go down the list and read all the amazing reviews! Thanks again- you truly saved us

My son had an accident in May 2024. The policemen issued a careless driving charge. This was the first time that we had to deal with something like this and we were looking for help. We came across Dan from NextLaw by researching the Internet and looking at some YouTube videos. We had a call with Dan in which he explained the process and how he dealt with charges like this. We concluded that Dan was the right person to assist us, and we engaged him to handle the case. The process was very easy. Dan kept us informed on the steps to take and was able to drop the charge against my son. We highly recommend Dan to anyone facing the same situation. Thank you, Dan. Patrick

How NextLaw Helps G2 Drivers
G2 stunt driving cases require a legal representative who understands both the standard stunt driving defence strategies and the additional graduated licensing complications. At NextLaw, we handle these cases regularly.
We start by requesting full disclosure from the prosecution—the officer’s report, notes, calibration records, speed measurement data, and any video or witness statements. We analyze every detail for weaknesses.
We then negotiate with the Crown prosecutor. We explain why conviction is unlikely. We present our evidence analysis. For G2 drivers, we also emphasize the disproportionate impact—licence cancellation and having to restart graduated licensing is a severe consequence that goes well beyond what the situation warrants. Many prosecutors recognize this and agree to withdraw or reduce the charge.
If the charge is reduced to simple speeding, the outcome changes dramatically. Instead of licence cancellation and $2,000+ fines, you might face a speeding ticket for a few hundred dollars with minimal demerit points. Your G2 stays intact. Your path to a full G licence continues. Your insurance takes a much smaller hit.
If negotiation doesn’t achieve withdrawal, we prepare thoroughly for trial. We cross-examine the officer effectively. We challenge every piece of evidence. We create reasonable doubt.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if you get a stunt driving charge with a G2 licence in Ontario?
G2 drivers face all the same penalties as fully licensed drivers—30-day roadside suspension, 14-day vehicle impound, fines from $2,000 to $10,000, and up to 2 years licence suspension upon conviction. On top of that, G2 drivers face additional consequences under graduated licensing: a separate 30-day novice driver suspension, potential licence cancellation requiring you to restart from the G1 written test, and a lower 9-point demerit threshold.
Can a G2 driver lose their licence permanently for stunt driving?
Not permanently, but the practical effect can feel that way. Licence cancellation means restarting the entire graduated licensing process—G1 written test, 12-month G1 hold period, G2 road test, 12-month G2 hold period, then the full G test. Combined with a conviction suspension of up to 2 years, some G2 drivers don’t get back on the road for years.
Do G2 drivers face harsher penalties for stunt driving than full G licence holders?
Yes. The base stunt driving penalties are the same, but G2 drivers get hit with additional graduated licensing consequences. The separate novice driver suspension, potential licence cancellation, and lower demerit point threshold all make the situation significantly worse for G2 drivers.
Can a stunt driving charge on a G2 licence be withdrawn or reduced?
Absolutely. Provincial data shows 48.3% of all stunt driving charges in Ontario are withdrawn. G2 drivers have the same legal options as fully licensed drivers. Many charges are withdrawn entirely or reduced to simple speeding tickets. The disproportionate impact on G2 drivers can actually work in your favour during negotiations—prosecutors sometimes recognize that licence cancellation is too harsh for the circumstances.
How does stunt driving affect G2 insurance rates in Ontario?
A stunt driving conviction is devastating for G2 insurance. Young drivers already pay higher premiums. After a conviction, rates can jump to $8,000–$15,000+ per year—an increase of 300–500%. Many standard insurers refuse coverage entirely. The impact lasts 6 or more years, costing tens of thousands in excess premiums during the early years of your career.
What is the demerit point limit for G2 drivers in Ontario?
G2 drivers face automatic licence suspension at 9 demerit points, compared to 15 for fully licensed G holders. A stunt driving conviction adds 6 points—putting you two-thirds of the way to automatic suspension. Any additional minor infraction could trigger yet another suspension on top of the stunt driving consequences.
Your Next Steps
Having a G2 licence makes this situation more serious, not less. The additional penalties for novice drivers—licence cancellation, graduated licensing restart, lower demerit thresholds—mean you have more to lose than a fully licensed driver. But you also have real options.
The data proves that stunt driving charges can be fought successfully. Nearly half are withdrawn. Many others are reduced to simple speeding. Your G2 status doesn’t have to define your outcome.
We’ve helped hundreds of G2 drivers across Ontario protect their licences and their futures. We know the courts. We know the prosecutors. We know what works for novice driver cases specifically. Let us review your case and explain your options.
