How to prepare for meeting a DUI Lawyer in Ontario

It’s so important to get DUI / Impaired legal advice

When you retain a lawyer, obviously, our job is to do the best that we can for you and hopefully get your charges withdrawn and get the absolute best outcome for you. But that first initial meeting that you have with a lawyer is really, really important. What we’re trying to do is get all the relevant facts from you. And we try and take those facts and we put them in the context of your charges – in the context of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Analyzing Your Evidence

There’s a lot of things that we need to do to analyze your case. To get the most out of your meeting and for you to learn a lot about your charges and what those charges mean in the context of the facts of your case, it’s important to accurately describe to your lawyer what, in fact, happened when you were charged.

Meet with a lawyer sooner rather than later

Now, what I always recommend is to sit down as soon as you can, after the charges happened. This is usually when you have a much clearer head. Also, you’re in a situation where things are calmer because you’re no longer in custody of the police. So now, a good move is to write down on a piece of paper, in chronological order, everything that happened in as much detail as possible. And write on the top, put your name and put the word confidential on it and put a date on it.

Write it all Down – It’s Key

If you take the time and write down every single thing and no detail is too much, write it out, list it out in as much detail as possible- from the start of the event, all the way to the time that the police let you go and subsequently released you from custody. If you take that and write that out and flesh that out in a lot of detail, it will actually help the lawyer give you the best advice he or she can give you. And ultimately, even if you don’t retain that lawyer, you will get some really valuable feedback – especially given the fact that you’ve spent the time detailing your case. That fact will make that meeting with you and your lawyer that much more effective. And it will certainly provide you a lot of benefit.
