1/ Record everything- In these notes, you want to cover 2 things.
- First, write down everything that happened leading up to your DUI.
- And second, write down everything that happened from the time you were arrested until the police released you from custody.
2/ Write it down in chronological order- That means to write your notes in a timeline.
- For example, on Sunday at 3 pm, I was with 3 friends at a party. Then on Sunday at 3.45 pm, I was feeling light-headed and took some Tylenol. Then at 4.15 pm, I got in my car to go home. Etc. Etc.
- In other words, write a storyline that follows what happened and when. This makes it easy for your lawyer to follow.
3/ Don’t edit- Write down what happened and when in detail.
- Let your lawyer decide what’s important to your case and what’s not.
- An experienced DUI lawyer may see something in your storyline that you think is irrelevant but may become key to winning your case.
- So don’t edit your information.
4/ Do it ASAP- Don’t wait.
- Waiting too long to write down notes about what happened increases the likelihood of forgetting something that may make the difference between winning and losing your DUI case.
