1/ Find out where your vehicle is located- When the Police impound your vehicle due to a driving while under suspension charge, the Police will give you paperwork about which towing company is holding your vehicle.
- If you did not get that paperwork, contact the police station using their non-emergency phone number.
2/ Confirm the tow company has your vehicle- You should call the tow company to confirm that they have your vehicle.
- It’s also important to find out where your vehicle is located because the tow company may have multiple impound yards.
3/ Confirm when the vehicle release will happen- You will be able to see clearly on the Police paperwork how long the impound will be.
- When you call the towing company, it’s important to confirm that its release date matches the release date indicated on the Police paperwork.
- If the release dates differ, contact the police and ask them to resolve the release date problem with the towing company.
4/ Find out what the impounding cost will be- Make sure that the tow company tells you how much the total impound will cost.
- Generally, there are 2 fees. The cost to tow your vehicle to the yard. And the daily storage fee.
- In some cases, there may be a 3rd fee which is known as excess kilometres. This is when the distance to the tow yard exceeds a certain distance.
- Also, you should get the full name of the person you spoke with at the tow yard.
5/ Organize the pick-up of your vehicle- When it’s time to get your car, your driver’s license may still be suspended.
- If that’s the case, then you need to organize the pick-up.
- You will need to go to the tow yard with someone who can drive your car home.
