1/ Basic medical requirements- Every driver operating a vehicle in Ontario must meet basic medical requirements to be licensed to drive.
- These requirements are defined in Section 14 in the Ontario Regulation 340/94.
- In its simplest terms, these requirements state that you can’t have any medical condition that interferes with your driving ability.
- And if you do, you will NOT get a driver’s license.
- Now, if you get a medical condition AFTER you have a driver’s license, then your drivers license will get suspended due to medical conditions.
2/ Medical professionals must report- There are 3 professionals that have a legal obligation to report any medical issues that may impair your ability to drive.
- These professionals are physicians, nurses and optometrists.
- These professionals are required by law to report your medical condition to the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario.
3/ The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario will review- Once the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario receives the report from the medical professional, they will review the report and decide whether you are medically fit to drive.
- This review process will take up to 30 business days.
- If the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario believes you are not medically fit to drive, they will suspend your driver’s license for medical reasons.
- The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario will then send you a letter in the mail, which is a formal notice of your driver’s license suspension due to medical reasons.
- And the letter will also let you know what you need to do to get your license reinstated.
