- The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario, known as the MTO, is the provincial government body that is responsible for driver licenses.
- That responsibility includes the power to suspend your driver’s license due to medical reasons.
- If that happens, the MTO will send you a letter informing you of the medical suspension.
- And, here’s what’s important.
- That letter will also outline the type of medical information you need to get your license reinstated.
- And that is the key to getting your driver’s license back.
- Give the MTO the exact medical information included in the license suspension letter.
- You will need to contact a medical professional who would produce that medical information.
- Where you get that information depends on the type of medical impairment that led to your driver’s license suspension.
- For example, you may be able to get that information from your family doctor.
- But in some cases, you may need to go to a specialist.
- For example, if you have seizures, you may need to go to a Neurologist.
- If you have heart issues, you may need to go to a Cardiologist.
- If you have vision issues, you may need to go to an Optometrist.
- When you have your medical appointment, make sure you show your Doctor the letter you got from the MTO.
- And, importantly, ask the Doctor whether they will give you the medical information needed by the MTO.
- If yes, ask how long it will take to get that information.
- And how long it will take to submit that information to the MTO.
- And if the Doctor cannot give you that medical information, ask the Doctor what you need to do to get your driver’s license back.
- And ask how long that would take.
- Once the MTO receives that medical information, it will take up to 30 business days to review your file.
- If the MTO agrees that the medical information meets the medical standards for driving, the MTO will send you a letter confirming that your driver’s license has been reinstated.
- This approval assumes that you have no other reasons for suspending your license.
- If the MTO disagrees that your medical information meets the medical standards, they will send you another letter with the MTO’s decision.
- At that point, if you disagree with the MTO, you have an option to appeal the decision to the License Appeal Tribunal.
